A Tray of Newent Onions So many colours and textures, they just invite hands to pick through to find the most pleasing onion. The task is then to unwrap the outer layers to find the fresh present beneath. The green shoots seem so fresh compared to the outer skins of the onion. All this life ready to burst forth! The entire base of the market hall is piled with sacksful of onions in all shapes, sizes and colours. Bystanders are fascinated to watch onions being strung by dexterous fingers and sympathise with contestants brave enough to tackle the raw onion eating contests. The Berry Pickers When berries are ripe, it doesn't take long for them to be stripped from the bushes and trees by the local bird population and those rare species visiting just for the treat. Unlike some flocks, individual crows look out in separate directions, scanning the landscape, building up a detailed map of movement.
