'The Gathering' by Janice Lyall

'The Gathering' by Janice Lyall

What do you see in this painting? Our imagination will fill in the gaps as we try to make sense of the vision before us. The experience will be different for everyone. Acrylic, abstract painting by Janice Lyall

A Brown Newent Onion

A Brown Newent Onion

The outer shell of a brown onion is thin, transparent and delicate and has a wafer light, crinkle feel which is so different to the tearful, under layers. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

A Red Newent Onion

A Red Newent Onion

Red onions have a pleasing shine to their outer surface and have a rich, dark red which isn't often seen. Twirling one in my hand brings memories of childhood cricket in the playing fields Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

A Tray of Newent Onions

A Tray of Newent Onions

So many colours and textures, they just invite hands to pick through to find the most pleasing onion. The task is then to unwrap the outer layers to find the fresh present beneath. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

A Bag of Newent Onions

A Bag of Newent Onions

Sometimes I forget all the places that I have stored onions and come across a bag months later which have started to sprout. The green shoots seem so fresh compared to the outer skins of the onion. All this life ready to burst forth! Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

Fun at Newent Onion Fayre copyright.jpg

...And its all about Onions! The entire base of the market hall is piled with sacksful of onions in all shapes, sizes and colours. Bystanders are fascinated to watch onions being strung by dexterous fingers and sympathise with contestants brave enough to tackle the raw onion eating contests. Its a day of celebration, live music, Morris Dancing, fun fairs and of course, eating. 'Shallot to see!' Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

The Berry Pickers

The Berry Pickers

When berries are ripe, it doesn't take long for them to be stripped from the bushes and trees by the local bird population and those rare species visiting just for the treat. Not the best time to hang out the washing! Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

The Gatherers at Crow's Nest

The Gatherers at Crow's Nest

There is something mysterious about the watchfulness of crows. Unlike some flocks, individual crows look out in separate directions, scanning the landscape, building up a detailed map of movement. Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

The Ice Melts

The Ice Melts

Each drop of water is released from its icy captivity and hurriedly awakens with excited energy to renew its long journey back to the oceans. How soon before it arrives and how many tales to tell before it gets there? Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

Before the Big Bang

Before the Big Bang

There is tension, there is brooding, kinetic energy is amassing, there is a surge, there is the beginning of............? Acrylic painting by Janice Lyall

Out to Lunch

Out to Lunch

A long morning working in the warm fields and a welcome lunch to revitalise exhausted limbs for the next session. Fresh croissants, mature cheese, spring onions, a crisp cox apple and a small glass of sparkling cider. Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall

Respite from the Sun

Respite from the Sun

On a sweltering, sunny afternoon, the relief comes from fresh water and the shelter of shade. The coolness is welcoming from the starkness of the bright sun Watercolour painting by Janice Lyall
